From President Franklin Roosevelt’s Address before the Inter-American Conference for the Maintenance of Peace at Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 1, 1936.

I am profoundly convinced that the plain people everywhere in the civilized world today wish to live in peace one with another. And still leaders and Governments resort to war. Truly, if the genius of mankind that has invented the weapons of death cannot discover the means of preserving peace, civilization as we know it lives in an evil day.

Roosevelt went on to sound an alarm that would be echoed by President Eisenhower, a Republican, 25 years later:

We know, too, that vast armaments are rising on every side and that the work of creating them employs men and women by the millions. It is natural, however, for us to conclude that such employment is false employment; that it builds no permanent structures and creates no consumers’ goods for the maintenance of a lasting prosperity. We know that Nations guilty of these follies inevitably face the day when either their weapons of destruction must be used against their neighbors or when an unsound economy, like a house of cards, will fall apart.

Items sent to the White House are often significantly delayed and can be irreparably harmed during the security screening process. Therefore, please do not send items of personal importance, such as family photographs, because items may not be returned.

For security reasons, please do not send consumable gifts — such as food, flowers, and other perishable items — to the White House. While President Obama, the First Lady, Vice President Biden, and Dr. Biden appreciate your thoughtfulness, they request that instead you look to your local community for opportunities to assist your neighbors in need.

Thinking of Home

"Thinking of Home"

It’s stuck in the 20th century.

Between outdated and inadequate computers and government regulations, including the Presidential Records Act, the availability of information at WhiteHouse.gov has been thin. But they are working on it. Be patient.

(WaPo) One member of the White House new-media team came to work on Tuesday, right after the swearing-in ceremony, only to discover that it was impossible to know which programs could be updated, or even which computers could be used for which purposes. The team members, accustomed to working on Macintoshes, found computers outfitted with six-year-old versions of Microsoft software. Laptops were scarce, assigned to only a few people in the West Wing. The team was left struggling to put closed captions on online videos.

The good news? President Obama gets to keep — and use — his Blackberry. His email address is classified though, so you won’t be able to cc the President on your correspondence.

Vice President Joe Biden, in the presence of President Barack Obama, swears in the White House Senior Staff, Wednesday, January 21, 2009.

Our President does not look amused when our Vice President makes a funny at Chief Justice Roberts’ expense. Whatever the President may think, I personally am very glad to have a Vice President with a sunny sense of humor.

Congratulations, America!

Your new President has reported for duty.

May we achieve the changes we dream of.

"White House, earliest (sic) known view (made in 1860's)"

I have added a new link to the side bar — to the White House. For too long it has felt like a place to be feared. It is a real pleasure to feel that once again it is the People’s House.

Our President.

Sleeping porch on the roof of the White House Erected during the Taft Administration.

The Solarium, or Sun Room, was added to the White House in the early 20th century by William Howard Taft in the form of a “Sleeping Porch” to give the first family a cool place to sleep on hot nights. It was improved in 1927 when the third floor was expanded, and Grace Coolidge called it the “Sky Parlor.” It was redesigned again in the 1952 Truman reconstruction and now includes a kitchenette.
