Caroline Kennedy has withdrawn her name from consideration to replace Hillary Clinton as Senator from New York. Senator Clinton was confirmed by the Senate today as Secretary of State.

NY Governor David Paterson will likely announce his choice to replace Senator Clinton on Friday this week.

According to the New York Times, Caroline Kennedy said she was withdrawing due to “concerns about Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s deteriorating health.”

People are pointing and laughing that she’s pulling her name because she’s already been told that she’s not going to be appointed.

Meanwhile, Glenn Thrush reports that “according to an aide,” news trucks are encamped outside Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand‘s house. She is a popular choice with some but, apparently, not others.

UPDATE (1/23/09): Kirsten Gillibrand is the new junior Senator from New York.
