PHILADELPHIA – At the birthplace of American independence, President-elect Barack Obama began his inaugural journey with a call for a new declaration of independence.

“We’re here not only to pay tribute to our founders, but to take up their work again,” he told several hundred people who came to Philadelphia to send him off on a trip that will end later today in Washington D.C.

“We need a new declaration of independence. Independence from ideology and small mindedness,” he added. “With this election, you proved once more that people who love this country can change it.”

The 137-mile journey has particular significance. It mimics the last legs of the inaugural train tour taken by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861. The 16th president led the nation through the Civil War and ended slavery in the United States.

On Tuesday, 148 years later, Obama will be the first African American sworn in as president.
