Vice President-elect Joe Biden announced today the creation of a new position in the Office of the Vice President: Chief Economist and Economic Policy Advisor to the Vice President.

Jared Bernstein, a senior economist and Director of the Living Standards program at the Economic Policy Institute, will fill the position.

Bernstein has expertise in the areas of federal, state and international economic policies, specifically the middle-class squeeze, income inequality and mobility, trends in employment and earnings, low-wage labor markets, poverty, and international comparisons. He is author of several books and academic treatises on the economy and the middle class. His opinions have appeared in American Prospect online (a regular column), Huffington Post, TalkingPointsMemo, the New York Times, the Washington Post and other venues. He served as Deputy Chief Economist (95-96) under Labor Secretary Robert Reich and currently serves on the advisory committee to the Congressional Budget Office’s.

I sure hope he gets to spend time at the elbow of the Labor Secretary (rumored to be one of the following: David Bonior, Kathleen Sebelius, Mary Beth Maxwell, Jennifer Granholm).
